As I start typing this, I'm somewhere over the Pacific Ocean, but that isn't where this starts.
Late in 2015, with copious amounts of vacation left, we decided that an adventure was needed. Since there is only one state we haven't been in, and one state we haven't motorcycled through, a plan was started to head far west and south to Hawaii.
Flights booked, reservations made, adventures planned, the day to depart finally came.
More for reasons of departure and arrival times than cost, the decision was made to drive to Detroit and stay at SO's sister's house, flying out early the next morning. As the day approached, the weather forecast near Detroit vacillated between tolerably bad and heinous. After rushing out of work, SO dropped the dogs into beagle-jail and we headed north.
It was raining for most of the trip until near Toledo. From Toledo North, it iced, creating extremely hazardous driving. Numerous cars were off the road in several spots, and I'm pretty sure they shut down the interstate one car length behind us. Not that this was a bad decision, but I was glad we made it through. Driving on the interstate with no other cars was kind of like 405 The Movie, but allowed for forgiving driving on the untreated roads, the snowy part of the road being better than the icy.
Within a reasonable amount of time, we made it to Sarah and Jason's and turned in after visiting for a while.
Sleep did not come easily, since much can, and historically has, gone wrong with my flying anywhere - flying means you hand over your vacation to the whim of the airlines.
